  3. Goddard’s Steak and Ale Pie

Sprightly service and always a pleasure to hear an actual Cockney accent in this tourist over-run corner of the capital. I’m a sucker for a pattern on the top although in traditional London style the crust extends way beyond the base making it look deceptively large. It is served warm with a cultured meaty whiff about it. There is a high meat ratio but felt more mincemeat than steak and also a load of dark jelly. In a pork pie yes but I’m not sure about it in a steak pie. There is rich, dark luscious gravy and mince although I can’t taste much ale in there. In summary, a sure fire winner which just about gets the balance right in its attempts to cater for Londoners and pie-starved Northerners stuck down south
