Greens sell nothing else other than pies, cakes and a few bottles of pop and it really is like a step back in time as working class Barrovians wait for their lunch. There’s a polite sign of the wall informing customers that they will be putting the price up by 10p shortly to cover the increased cost of ingredients along with a sign asking politely if ordering more than 20 please collect after 12.30. They’ve got steak and ale, pork, dinky meat pies, the aforementioned steak and kidney, meat and potato and cheese and potato
The signature meat and potato is encased in tender shortcrust, softer than an angel crying on your tongue. Externally it doesn’t look at all spectacular but once I open it up I’m left in awe as to how they pack it all in. Layer after layer of thick spud slice expanding like a concertina. It looks like one of those penny drops at the fairground where the chutes zig zag. There’s meat in there as well and juice running all over the show giving a hot pork pie effect when you reach the lower part of the casing. The flavour is absolutely amazing and I quickly devour a second for good measure.
