Walter’s gaff has meat and sausages down one side, pies down the other. I spot the pork pies too late: they’re nearly three quid with a dark crust but I want something to eat now which won’t fill me up so I go for a steak pie instead. They’ve got steak and ale, steak and kidney, sausage rolls and big Cornish pasties and they have cheese, potato and onion pies, but I rebuff the latter due to it looking too much like a cottage pie with potato masquerading as top crust.
Shit. I just bought a Pukka pie! Walter’s sold me a pup! The Irish drawl of Loyd Grossman pops into my head…the clues were there….the puff pastry lid….the black foil tray….the “WE SELL PUKKA PIES” sign. I’m regretting my choice as those pork pies were huge with a deep menacing pastry screaming “heartburn” at me but still too good to resist. Ho hum….
